Trendiness

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

The technology world is just as suceptable to marketing and smooth talking as any other. There are consulting companies who come in with slick sounding ideologies, good looking people and promises of quick development. Now if they can do this, awesome, but more often than not this is all just clever marketing. Developing software correctly should be difficult or time consuming if done correctly. Getting it out into the world is another issue all together. Take PHP for example. It is reasonably powerful and to deploy you upload it to you web directory. Great for vitual hosts up to colo boxes. Ruby on Rails still justifies it’s poor deployment and performance on Moore’s Law, which says processing power will double every 18 months. Deployment isn’t very simple either, since Rails monkey patches certain Ruby libraries sometimes RoR apps don’t play nice on the same server, so you have to virtualize the environment. Now python isn’t so easy to deploy either, but it performs well and doesn’t have lib issues (that I’m aware of). I long for the simplicity of PHP deployment, Python elegance and Ruby on Rails trendiness.

Narrow Stairs - Death Cab for Cutie

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

I’ve been trying to broaden my musical horizons lately. If I hear a few songs from an album that I like, I’ll try to download it and I’ve had pretty good success. Narrow Stairs by Death Cab for Cutie came out in May 2008. I’ve heard “I Will Possess Your Heart” a few times, and enjoyed it, but today I heard “Cath…” and decided to purchase the album. I’ve been very satisfied by this album. Ben Gibbard, who also contributed to the Postal Service, has a uplifting and easy voice, even if he’s singing something not very uplifting. The one thing I’ve really noticed about the band is the drums. There is great complexity and variety. I think I’m going to enjoy this album.

Color Correction Gels

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

I got my LumiQuest FXtra gel holder which came with some color correction gels.  Here is a shot I took last night with my umbrella diffusing a 1/4 CTO gel.  Came out nice and warm.
